Draft Container Scheme Regulations 2024
Dr. Katrena Stephenson, Chair of TasWaste South, submitted feedback on the draft Container Refund Scheme Regulations 2023. TasWaste South, which was established by 12 Southern Councils to enhance coordination of waste management and resource recovery, expressed support for the Container Refund Scheme.
However, the submission highlighted concerns about the narrow scope of the Scheme, particularly regarding the types of containers included. Dr. Stephenson suggested that Tasmania could lead the nation by broadening the scope to include wine and spirit containers, following Queensland’s recent expansion of its scheme. She also emphasised the importance of considering this expansion before the Scheme’s implementation to avoid the need for extensive post-implementation consultation, as seen in Western Australia.
TasWaste South looks forward to continuing its involvement in the finalisation and implementation of the Scheme.
